SANEESWARA – UPHOLDER OF JUSTICE
MANY ARE AWARE OF HIS MALEFIC SPELL ONLY; BUT HE IS ALSO A BENEFACTOR
Among the Navagrahas (the nine planetary devatas), Sani (Saturn) alone occupies
a special position with the epithet Isvara attached to his name. Contrary to the
popular belief that his spell is malefic, he is an upholder of righteousness, as
is evidenced by is arraigning himself against his father, Surya protesting
injustice done to his mother, Chaya, who was the shadow manifestation of Surya’s
wife Samijna. It is said that whoever leads a righteous life during the spell of
Sani will be duly rewarded.
Sani wanted to build an independent identity for himself and did deep penance to
Lord Siva and got the title Isvara and the postion as one of the Navagrahas.
Being the son of Chaya (shadow), sani is dark complexioned. He has blood red
eyes relecting the power of his father, Surya. In a combat with this
step-brother, Yamaraj, he was hit by the latter’s mace in his leg and became
lame. So he is known as Pangu. His movement from one rasi (Zodiac) to another is
slow (21/2 years), which is the longest time compared to other planets, and so,
he is also called manda (one who is slow). He punishes the unrighteous based on
their karma to undergo unbearable sufferings. So he is referred to as
Kruralochana (evil-eyed).
Astrological Status
Astrologically, Sanisvara occupies the western direction, the place of Varuna.
Sanisvara is the Lord of Makara and Kumba rasis. He is very powerful in Tula
rasi. The crow is his vahana (mount). Blue sapphire is said to be his favourite
precious stone. Gingelly Seed satisfies him.
He rules the stars Poosam, Anusham & Uttarattadi. Those born under these stars
will undergo Sani dasa at birth. The dasa period of Saniswara is 19 years. Lord
Yamaraj and Dharma Sastha are the ruling devas of Sani.
Sani is the Karaka (responsible) for granting long life, health, wealth, status,
power, position and happiness to an individual. If his grace is not there, one
will miss all the blessed aspects in life.
According to astrology, everyone undergoes a seven-and-half year spell under
Sani, which will be a period of crisis. For example, when Saturn enters a
zodiac, persons with birth stars coming under next Zodiac come under the
influence of sani for seven and half years. It lasts till Sani passes through
three zodiacs.
Generally, one-third of this period will see deterioration in standard of life,
another one-third will be of stagnation and the remaining one-third period will
aid progress. It also depends on the power of Saturn in one’s horoscope.
Influence on Nala
There is a proverb which says none can give like Sani and none can take away
like Sani. If Sani’s position is powerful and favourable in one’s horoscope, one
gets all the benefits of life. If his position is weak and powerless, sufferings
become a part of individual’s life. The best example for this is the story of
Nala Maharaja, who underwent a series of sufferings -- loss of his kingdom,
separation from his wife and labour as a cook – when he was under the spell of
saniswara. Though he underwent all these sufferings, he won back all the glory
after that spell through his uprighteousness during the bad period.
Siva not spared
Once Siva was sitting in meditation in Kailas. By his side was his consort,
Parvati. Sanisvara appeared before him, prostrated and with hesitation informed
the Lord that according to his horoscope, he had to undergo the seven and half
year’s spell starting that day. With humility and politeness Sanisvara asked
Siva how he should cast his spell on him – whether he could minimize it to just
for seven-and-a half nazhigais (approximately three hours), which was in his
power.
Siva was angry. Sanisvara pleaded that Siva himself had assigned him his duty
and he could not exempt anyone while performing it, which would mean
disobedience and disrespect to Siva himself. All that he could do was to
minimize the duration and impact, which he was willing to do in case of Siva.
Siva challenged Sanisvara and said he had not power or authority to throw his
spell on him. He immediately converted himself in to an energy atom and hid
inside the rudrakasha worn by Goddess Parvati. No power could penetrate
rudraksha, that too when it adorns the neck of the Goddess.
Sanisvara was patiently standing before the Goddess, praying to Siva. Meanwhile,
seven-and-a-half nazahigas passed. Siva came out of the rudraksha and claimed
that Sanisvara’s spell could not do anything to him.
In a Cell
Sanisvara politely replied, “No, my Lord. I have cast my spell on you for that
period. That is why you yourself created a prison in the rudraksha and shut
yourself up inside the cell, having all along a sense of insecurity and
forgetting all your duties. On account of your imprisonment all the worlds stood
still without any energy and activity”.
Siva said, “Sanisvara, I manoeuvred this event and played this role only to
reveal the fact that no one can ignore your spell or your power.” Sanisvara
replied, “Lord you have given me the title Isvara. Grant me all your qualities
of grace and mercy when I try to cast my spell on mankind.” Siva granted his
boon.
That is why the Sastras say that if one followed the path of righteousness and
worshipped Siva and Sanisvara, the seven-and-half-year period of Sani’s spell
will not do much harm.
Sani and Hanuman
In the Ramayana, Sethu Bandanam (building a bridge) is a magnificient event. Sri
Rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman and Sugriva and his Vanara Sen was involved in the
mighty task of building a bridge across the sea to reach Lanka, the kingdom of
Ravana, to rescue sita, who was a captive of Ravana. Under the leadership of
Hanuman, the vanara (monkeys) were carrying huge rocks to build the bridge.
Hanuman was busy in this task.
Sanisvara appeared before Hanuman to inform him that the time has come to throw
this spell on him for seven-and-a-half years. He also gave Hanuman the choice of
lesser periods. Hanuman was neither thrilled nor frightened by the appearance of
Sanisvara, which was surprise to Sani. Impatiently he asked hanuman, “I want to
cast my spell on you. Which part of your body should I occupy?”
Hanuman said, ‘on my head’. Accordingly, Sanisvara sat on the head of Hanuman,
assuming that he could show his maximum power and spell on him. Hanuman lifted
the largest stone, placed it on his head and started walking towards the sea to
build the Sethu (bridge). He repeatedly carried the heaviest stones and
Sanisvara, sitting on his head, had to bear all the weight and stress. In a few
minutes Sanisvara was suffocated.
He realised that he had made an error of judgement. Realising that Hanuman is
the manisfestation of Lord Siva, he repented for his mistake and withdrew the
spell on Hanuman. He jumped off Hanuman’s head, stood before him and said,
“Hanuman I have done my duty towards you. You are released from my spell. Seek
any boon, I will grant it.” Hanuman said “O Sanisvara make a promise that you
will be gracious and merciful towards devotees of Rama who chant Rama nama.”
Sanisvara granted his wish.
All over North India, people greet each other saying,’Ram, Ram.’ This indirectly
protects them from the spell of Sanisvara.
Sanisvara and Ravana
Another incident in the Ramayana highlights the power of Sanisvara and shows how
he helped Rama in destroying Ravana.
After winning the kingdom of devas, Ravana took the navagrahas into captivity
and treated them as his throne. The graham devas were lying on the steps with
their faces towards the earth and Ravana used to ascend to his throne, stepping
on the backs of Navagrahas.
From this arrogant behaviour, Ravana had to be punished and his critical days
should commence, leading to his downfall. This would be possible only under the
spell of Sanisvara. But Sanisvara himself was in a helpless position, lying face
down at the feet of Ravana. So Brahma sent Narada to help Sanisvara throw his
spell on Ravana.
Narada came to Ravana’s durbar and entered in to a conversation with him. He
said, “O Ravana, I thought you are a great warrior and courageous person. But
you seem to be a coward. If you are really powerful, you should attack your
enemies from the front, and not from behind. You have placed the navagrahas as
steps to your throne, but you have no courage to step on their chest.”
The Spell Is Cast
Ravana thought for a while and felt that Narada was right. He immediately
ordered the navagrahas to turn around and lie on their backs, facing him. With
great sense of achievement he stepped on their chest. When he neared Sanisvara,
the latter opened his red eyes and looked at Ravana, thus throwing his spell on
him. His punishment hour started. Just then Soorpanaka, Ravana’s sister, entered
the durbar, screaming, with her nose cut by Lakshmana, Rama’s brother.
It was that event which induced Ravana to wreak vengeance on Rama and Lakshmana.
But when he went for the purpose to Panchavati, he saw Sita and wanted to
possess her. He started committing sin after sin till he was killed by Sri Rama.
Sanisvara thus played a significant role in Ravana Samhara.
